The example reported in Fig. 1 shows the response of a cylindrical smooth implant in detachment conditions under the application of combined intrusive and transversal loads. The detachment of the implant from bone must be considered as a limit condition and is proposed with educational purpose only.
A distinction of the mechanical properties is made between cortical and trabecular bone. Different values of the Young's modulus are assumed also for the regions of bone around the implant. The Young's modulus in the transition region between implant and cortical bone, is set at 1.5 GPa. The Young's modulus in the transition region between implant and trabecular bone is set at 1.5 GPa. The cortical thickness is set at the value of 1.5 mm and a gap between bone and implant is considered too. The gap must be intended as the zone, between implant and bone, where the mechanical properties of the bone tissue are so poor that can be considered null. An intrusive force of 200 N and a transversal force (lingual - buccal direction) of 20 N are applied to the implant. The magnitude displacement field is depicted for a transversal section of the mandible, considering also the displacement field induced on implant. This proves the relevant stiffness of the implant with respect to the bone tissue.
